I feel job seeking requires a proper strategy especially today. Hence one needs to be careful during networking and asking for job rerferences.

That's true if you are searching for a job and need to know where the jobs are.

In this particular case, there was no job! Nobody had even thought about creating this job. It was my client who used his network, listened to the way people were moaning and groaning at a certain company, and then he planted the seeds of ways he could solve their problems. Over the course of weeks he showed them how, if he took over certain parts of a project, things would improve.

Eventually they were sold on the idea and a position was created for him. So that's the point. He didn't have to know where the jobs were, he just had to know people who had a problem. He had to find the pain point and show them how it could be fix it.
