Your comment really resonates Isabelle and my point exactly. Outplacement firms, clearly to save money, have very much a 1, 2, 3 process that is targeting the masses rather than the individual. It is ludicrous to assume that everyone comes to an outplacement firm with the same knowledge -- or even at the same level, industry or job type. Rudimentary questioning early in the process should be able to identify the individual's needs and tailor the available services to meet those needs. Otherwise, why bother with an exercise in futility?

Gayle,

I couldn't agree more with your article and it's a shame that the government is throwing lots of money into another revamped "Job Services Australia".

I have recently experienced the outplacement process and was totally demoralised after my first visit to a designated outplacement agency. It did not matter to the 20s+ recruitment consultant that I was a Research Manager for a global executive search, I know how to write resume, search on the internet and make cold calls because that was my job as a "headhunter".... I was told that before they can help me I need to do a course on writing CV, using internet and how to make cold calls because it doesn't matter how experienced I am, I will always learn something new .... and I need to go through the process to qualify for the government Newstart assistance!

There is a missing link in the outplacement service to find real job for experienced middle management.
