If there was ever an email that proves my point on how resumes really do make a difference, it was the email I received from Adam today. Adam is an aspiring CEO, he’s close, but this is the first time he’s ever felt ready to take the plunge from senior management to the heady heights of a Chief Executive role. A lot of people, too many to count actually, have said to me “Look the resume doesn’t really matter too much, once I get invited to an interview, I’ll be able to sell myself without an issue”. What they forget is that something has to elicit that ‘must have’ response in the employer. And that “something” is the resume.
Read what Adam had to say:
“You know, I firmly believe I would not have been offered an interview if it weren’t for the work you did on my CV. You were able to clearly articulate and present what I have accomplished over the years and you brought my experience alive, providing context and relevance. This was evidenced in my pre-interview this week. Usually in interviews I have to really work at explaining what I have done and how it has relevance to the job. This week I really spent no time expanding on what was written but more about me as a person.
I’m down to the last five so the resume has completely done its job and now it is down to me to see whether the relationship and fit from both sides will be the best one. Once again, thanks for all your help and you should be proud of yourself knowing that you have been instrumental in helping me get there. I’ll let you know how I go!
See what I mean? A resume really does make a difference! Adam has spent so much time trying to convince people at interview. Now the resume has stated the facts for him, all he has to do is keep “on brand” with the person depicted in the resume, reinforce the key points, and be confident!
